MULTIPLE EXPOSURE
IN REAL TIME
2014 // TRIBECA [NYC]
Silver Gelatin’s made in the Multiple Exposure in Real Time [MERT] camera obscura.
I had set up the back of the camera as a darkroom and started to experiment with creating silver gelatin prints inside the camera. Quickly, I realized that I now had access to the one thing I can never get to inside my camera: the photosensitive surface. I started conducting experiments along the lines of Richard Serra’s The Verb List, bending, folding, moving the surface. Besides this, I also experimented with liquid light, a photo emulsion that can be painted onto various substrates to capture images.
Two inverted black and white silver gelatin, multiple exposures, portrait 11x14 inches, each. The right side is a dark shadow, a couple of light rings at the bottom makes it read as a column, the left side is a chaotic mix of light and shadow, which reads as a tight alley, thought it is a mixed view of Chambers Street.

The scene is bright, a fire hydrant and metal railing which should be solid and straight are wavy as if seen through water, everything is in movement. The paper crumbled while being exposed, and flattened after, creating this effect.

Inverted black and white silver gelatin, multiple exposures, portrait 8x10 inches. A dark composition is cut by a horizontal band of light across the bottom, in this are the rear end of a few cars visible, above them a full figure is standing, their head looks like it’s engulfed in flames.

Inverted black and white silver gelatin, multiple exposures, portrait 11x14 inches. A shadow sits in the center, and the lower part of the image is the first thing you’ll see. Then, notice that a diagrammatic, child-like drawing of a face is scratched into the surface of the paper. After seeing this, you can read the shadow as a vague portrait showing just more than half a face.
